Apart from GDP and unemployment figures, liquidation statistics also reveal much
about the state of an economy. According to Stats SA, 2042 businesses shut their doors
in the first seven months of the year.
The number of liquidations increased by 10,7% in 2019 compared with 2018.
Company liquidations increased by 11,0% (from 972 to 1 079) and close corporation
liquidations increased by 10,3% (from 873 to 963) between 2018 and 2019.
Most of these CC's are in the catering, tourism and accommodation sector.
While the business service, insurance, and financing sector was the hardest hit.
This is a further sign that the South African economy is in a rut, from which it is
struggling to get itself out of.
