Having largest number of glaciers outside Polar region, Gilgit-Baltistan is a sensitive ecology. The rise in tourism in the region has contributed to the local economy but at cost? It came at the cost of environmental degradation, unplanned construction, pollution and social challenges among many others. The failure to protect the fragile and sensitive environment of Gilgit Baltistan can cause irrecoverable loss to the region.
To better understand this topic, we invited Dr. Zahra Hussain, an Architect and Cultural Geographer. Her research focuses on architecture and sustainable development, especially in the mountain landscapes of Northern Pakistan. Our host, Amir Hussain, and Dr. Zahra Hussain engage in a discussion about what needs to be done, and how architecture can combat climate change and its impacts in Gilgit-Baltistan and Pakistan.
