TOV 25-212 Fasting for Strength: Starving the Flesh, Feeding the Spirit

Listen Later

Most men don’t fast. Let’s just say it like it is. It’s uncomfortable. It messes with your routine. And your stomach hates it. But here’s the truth—what you feed grows, and what you starve dies. Fasting isn’t about punishing yourself. It’s about sharpening your spirit and silencing your flesh. It’s one of the most neglected weapons in a warrior’s arsenal—and one of the most powerful.

Our springboard for today’s discussion is:“But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” — Matthew 6:17–18 (ESV)

Jesus didn’t say “if you fast.” He said “when.” That means it’s not optional. It’s expected. Because He knows what fasting does—it humbles you, strengthens you, and draws you into deeper intimacy with Him.

Fasting exposes the noise in your soul. The cravings. The habits. The areas you’ve been relying on instead of God. And when you lay those things down, even for a day, something shifts. You become more alert. More sensitive. More powerful in prayer.

Now let me be clear—fasting isn’t a hunger strike to manipulate God. It’s a reset. It’s how you say, “God, I need You more than food. More than comfort. More than control.”

Here’s how to start:

* Choose a day this week. Fast one meal, or fast from sunup to sundown.

* Use that time to pray, worship, or read the Word.

* Expect resistance—and press through it.

You’ll be surprised what God reveals when the noise of the flesh is silenced.

Question of the Day:What’s something you need to fast from this week to draw closer to God?

Mini Call to Action:Pick one day this week to fast—food, social media, or anything that’s been pulling on your soul more than God. Make it intentional. Make it spiritual.

Prayer:Father, teach me to hunger for You more than anything else. Help me deny my flesh so my spirit can rise up strong. I want to be led by You, not by my cravings. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Let’s Get to Work.Discipline your appetite. Strengthen your spirit. Train like a warrior who knows where true power comes from.
