Publisher's Summary:
"That the fresh and haunting new voice Lindsay Stern exercises in Town of Shadows is difficult to classify ought to serve only to make it impossible to ignore. Rife with arch urgency, brief density, and fruitful disregard for traditional genre bounds, Stern's debut is an important addition to the recent rejuvenation of the novella form. Through its razor-sharp technique, translucent diction, and elliptical vignette structure, Town of Shadows peels layer from layer to reveal a complex, perspicacious author who is unafraid to trouble the water where poetry and prose mingle. Stern's youth and precocity are certainly striking, but don't let them dupe you: Here is a young Lydia Davis or Anne Carson unspooling only the beginning of a corpus all her own. Lindsay Stern defines the term 'one to watch'." (Laura Goode).
Members Reviews:
one of the best books I've read in a long time
It's not often that I read a book in one sitting, but I couldn't put this one down. I'm not sure what to call it--poetry, flash fiction--but it's excellent, whatever it is. The book consists of a series of short, surreal vignettes about a town, unnamed, with a page or two devoted to each member, or occasionally to events within the town. The town is infected by a single dream. A man finds himself on the wrong side of a mirror. The Mayor places birdcages on the heads of all the townspeople to keep thoughts from escaping.
Slowly, a plot--or a series of events--unfolds, though I would not say that the events are in chronological order. More than anything the pieces address modern "civilized" society, and the way this society deals with artists/children/poets/anyone who dares to question or speak out against the system of authority.
Perhaps the most arresting aspect of TOS is the voice of its author, Lindsay Stern. She speaks with the strange authority of Lewis Carroll, lending an everydayness to the bizarre happenings she describes. Using numbers, science, math and a loopy logic (clock - hands = pulse, today / day = now) she creates a world which is at once dark and charming.
Don't Miss This One
Very different as to literary construction as well as to (apparent) meaning. Therefore a very unusual read. I definitely recommend it to others.
Amazing book!
Surprising. Illuminating. Rich. Each page a revelation. Totally original! I loved it very very much!
It would make an excellent gift.

I get a fair number of books to review, although it's tapered off recently, which is fine by me. I have plenty to read and plenty to write. That being said, when Lindsay contacted me and said that J.A. Tyler from Mud Luscious Press had recommended me to review her book, I jumped on it, and I'm so glad I did.
In the vein of Matt Bell's Cataclysm Baby comes Town of Shadows, a series of short stories all tied together with a bow. The main characters are Pierre and Selma - Selma is a writer and Pierre is doing a series of experiments. The other characters in the town of shadows are just that...shadows. We never fully get to know anyone, but we are still drawn into their stories. The mayor of the town likes to make up rules for the town, like not using vowels.
