OKAY-ISH

Toxic Positivity

Listen Later

We’ve all tried to cheer someone up, but have you or a friend said something positive with no meaning behind it? Maryellen expresses how toxic positivity has grown in the past year from COVID and how it’s an inauthentic way of expressing our true emotions by minimizing them and acting fake. This can also be a form of gaslighting, questioning people’s thoughts and sense of reality by manipulation. Maryellen shows us examples of toxic positivity and how ignoring our emotions can damage not only ourselves but loved ones around us and gives us 5 ways to deal with this toxicity.
1. Recognize the toxic positivity
2. Remember basic facts about feelings such as they’re meant to be felt and are dichotomous
3. Don’t feed into it, follow Maryellen’s rule of thumb: only offer advice when asked
4. Go off social media
5. Know that we are all Okay-ish
