Toxic Positivity may sound like an oxymoron - how can positivity be toxic? In this episode Jamie and Guy discuss how at times the overuse of positivity can actually be harmful or cause more pain in an already trying circumstance. Challenges and hardships in life can not simply be "covered up" with positive phrases that dismiss the difficulty or pain that comes with them. The only way through difficulties is to go through them. Recounting personal experiences of infertility and miscarriages to the death of loved ones, they discuss how we often try to console others with comments like "this too shall pass" or "let's make the best of it". Their well-meaning intention is to help the other person see the "positive" in a difficult situation but often it can backfire and make the person feel worse.
