'Nine heads of state have the ability to launch more than 12,500 nuclear weapons between them, threatening all life on this planet. The 2017 United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is the circuit breaker to the nuclear status quo. It is our best chance against our worst weapon.
ICAN was awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of our work “to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons” and our “ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons”.'
Following a decade of advocacy by ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) and its partners – an overwhelming majority of the world’s nations adopted a landmark global agreement to ban nuclear weapons, known officially as the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. It entered into force on 22 January 2021.
There are currently 95 signatories and 74 states parties. [21 Jan 2025]
Chansey Paech is currently the only NT MP who has signed the parliamentary pledge from 2017, which includes the signatures of Anthony Albanese, Malarndirri McCarthy and Marion Scrymgour to name a few.
