TPP 029: August Reflection – Standing up to Pressures When Transitioning to a Plant Based Diet

Standing up to Pressures When Transitioning to a Plant Based Diet
In this August reflection episode, we focus on the respective pressures we faced when we made our personal transitions to a plant based diet.  We divide this topic into 3 major segments: relationship pressures, social pressures, and work pressures.
We each approached veganism for different reasons.  For Isabelle, ethical convictions predominantly led her to what she calls a cruelty free compassionate lifestyle.  As if it were encoded in her DNA, she needed the right environment to trigger the trait.  For Noah, after formidable initial resistance, a plant-based diet came strictly out of health reasons.  In fact, he tried out a 30 day vegan challenge as a compromise with his better half.  Neither of them knew, however, that a plant-based lifestyle is what would ultimately bring them closest together.  This because their new lifestyle is built on compromise, compassion and respect for one another and the world around.
Amidst establishing a diet centered on whole plant based foods as a pillar in our household, we also needed to contend with pressures from family, friends, and the workplace.  How would we handle Thanksgiving for the first time?  What about ordering office lunches?  How do we go out to a restaurant and not feel like we’re being complicated?  What do we say when people question where we get our protein from?  We reflect on the times during our respective transitions, and how we practically dealt with those scenarios and pressures.
There are No Shortcuts
We learned first hand that the only way toward a personal vision to come true, is to take life by the horns and live up to the expectations you wish to fulfill.  In order to move forward, we must let go of the past.  Questioning the “social norms” of today are also critical to self-development.   The bottom line, there are no shortcuts to becoming what you aspire to be, and it only comes with patience, dedication, and perserverance.
