This digital story recording was created in conjunction with the Smithsonian's Museum on Main Street program and its Stories from Main Street student documentary initiative, called "Stories: Yes." The project encourages students and their mentors to research and record stories about small-towns and rural neighborhoods, waterways, personal memories, cultural traditions, work histories, as well as thoughts about American democracy. These documentaries are then shared on Smithsonian websites and social media.
Narrator (00:00): As the sun sets on another season of Track & Field, the Adair/Casey and Guthrie Center school districts in Iowa are at the forefront of a new generation. This is one of the many hometown teams, Adair/Casey-Guthrie center Track & Field. Having just completed their second year of whole grade sharing, the two districts are using teamwork to help ease the gradual transition. One of the athletes leading that effort is AC/GC junior, Kate Crawford. Having qualified to the State Meet the last two years, Crawford talks about her favorite part of practice.
Kate Crawford (00:31): Definitely the team aspect, because even on the hardest days of practice, you always know that your team has your back and that they're going to make it that much better for you, and it's also nice to know that after a hard practice that you improved.
Narrator (00:43): Former Guthrie Center Tiger, Julie Priestly, agrees with Crawford in regards to the importance teamwork has on building relationships.
Julie Priestly (00:51): We got to run with all ages of high school at that point, rather than just our classmates, so I got to know the seniors when I was a freshman and that was a lot of fun.
Narrator (00:59): Teamwork seems to have bridged the gap between time and place, and is one of the reason successful Track & Field continues in Guthrie Center to this day.
Kate Crawford (01:07): I wouldn't have been able to do anything I've done without the team, because they're the ones that keep me going, and they're the ones who make me smile when I definitely don't want to, and they just always are there for me,
Narrator (01:19): No matter where these athletes are in their journeys, whether they are about to start the race or are heading to the finish line, they know that teamwork will carry them through any circumstance they may face both on and off the track.
Narrator (01:31): We hope you take some time throughout the summer to take in the other storylines that make Guthrie Center a place that resonates with the value of hometown teams. Check out the Smithsonian Exhibit Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America, at the Mary J. Barnett Memorial Library in Guthrie Center, from June 23rd through August 5th.
