Tragedy and Triumph in Baltimore: Crime Update and Community Resilience

Listen Later

Welcome to your Baltimore news update. I'm Morgan Riley, bringing you the latest from our city.

Word on the streets of Baltimore is that tragedy struck again this week. On Sunday evening, Hakeen English, a 35-year-old man, was fatally shot in the 1600 block of Cliftview Avenue. This marks the second homicide in Baltimore this month, following the death of Keyon Bryant, 25, on April 3rd in the 4100 block of Patterson Avenue. These incidents continue a troubling trend of violence in our communities, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

In more positive news, the Baltimore City Department of Transportation's Micromobility Committee recently held its quarterly meeting, providing updates on the dockless vehicle program. Over 388,000 trips were taken on micromobility scooters and e-bikes in the first quarter of 2025, covering more than 436,000 miles. The average trip distance was 1.12 miles, with an average duration of about 10 minutes. The city is working to make these transportation options safer, more equitable, and more accessible citywide.

Shifting gears to a local success story, let's talk about the upcoming Baltimore Old Time Music Festival. This two-day gathering of roots musicians from across the country is set to return on April 18-19 at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. It's a fitting venue to showcase the genre's local history and celebrate our city's rich Americana past and present. The festival promises to be a vibrant celebration of Baltimore's musical heritage and contemporary talent.

Looking ahead to the weekend, we're in for some beautiful spring weather. Expect sunny skies with highs in the mid-60s, perfect for outdoor activities. Speaking of which, don't forget about the Big Baltimore Kite Fest coming up later this month. It's a great opportunity to enjoy our city's parks and open spaces as we fully embrace the spring season.

As we wrap up today's update, I'm reminded of how Baltimore continues to face challenges head-on while celebrating its resilience and community spirit. From addressing public safety concerns to investing in alternative transportation and preserving our cultural heritage, our city is working towards a brighter future for all residents.
