Tragedy in Boulder: Remembering Colorado Quarterback Dominiq Ponder

Listen Later

The University of Colorado community is mourning the tragic loss of Dominiq Ponder, a 23-year-old quarterback for the Buffaloes, who passed away in a single-vehicle accident in the early hours of March 1, 2026. The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Baseline Road in Boulder County. According to authorities, Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3 when he lost control of the vehicle on a right-hand curve. The car crossed into the opposite lane, struck a guardrail and an electrical pole, then rolled down an embankment before catching fire. Ponder, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have indicated that speed is suspected to have been a factor in the crash.
Ponder, a 6-foot-5 junior originally from Opa Locka and Naples, Florida, was a respected figure within the Colorado football program. His journey to Boulder was a testament to his perseverance; he previously spent time at Bethune-Cookman and Georgia Tech before transferring to Colorado in 2024. After redshirting his first year with the Buffaloes, he made his collegiate debut during the 2025 season in a game against Arizona and also contributed on special teams during a matchup against West Virginia.
While his on-field statistics were limited, his impact on the team’s culture was profound. Head coach Deion Sanders shared a heartfelt tribute, describing Ponder as a "born leader" and "one of my favorites." Sanders highlighted Ponder’s passion, heart, and his willingness to go beyond what was expected of him, noting that he was deeply loved and respected by those who knew him. Athletic department officials echoed these sentiments, stating that Ponder epitomized values such as toughness, intelligence, and enthusiasm.
The timing of the tragedy is particularly difficult for the team, as it occurred just before the scheduled start of spring football drills. To support the players and staff through this unimaginable loss, the university has provided counseling resources and mental health support. The broader sports community and the Big 12 conference have also extended their condolences to Ponder’s family and teammates as they navigate this period of grief. He is remembered not just as an athlete, but as a young man of character who left a lasting impression on the Colorado program.
