Welcome to the Houston News Update for May 9th, 2025. I'm Morgan Riley, bringing you the latest from our vibrant city.

Word on the streets of Houston is that tragedy struck East Harris County yesterday when an off-duty officer shot two men in his backyard, leaving one dead and another wounded. According to the Sheriff's Office, the two individuals may have entered the officer's property while fleeing a drive-by shooting, though investigations are still ongoing as authorities work to piece together the full story.

In another concerning development, a Silver Alert has been issued for Joseph Kelsey, who was last seen Tuesday, May 6th, on Cypress Grove Meadows Drive near FM 1960 and TC Jester in North Houston. If you have any information regarding his whereabouts, please contact local authorities immediately.

On a brighter note, Houston is gearing up for an exciting slate of May events. This Saturday, May 10th, head over to Karbach Brewing Co. for their Spring Market featuring local vendors and artisans. It's free admission from 4 to 10 PM – a perfect way to support local businesses while enjoying some of Houston's finest craft beer.

Looking ahead to next weekend, mark your calendars for iFest USA 2025 at Discovery Green on May 17th. This international festival celebrates global cultures with live entertainment, diverse cuisine, and cultural exhibits – all in the name of peace and unity. The festival runs from 3:30 to 9 PM, and admission is free.

The same day, the Katy Exchange will transform the Historic Town Square into a marketplace featuring handmade goods from local artisans. Shop, eat, and enjoy live music from 10 AM to 4 PM.

For families, the Houston Museum of Natural Science in Sugar Land will unveil a new exhibition on May 23rd called "Ciao Bambini!" – a wonderful opportunity to experience Italian culture through architecture, art, cuisine, and history.

As we navigate both the challenges and celebrations in our community, let's remember that Houston's strength lies in our diversity and resilience. Through tragedy and triumph, we remain connected by our shared humanity and love for this city we call home.
