She lives within and without the carnival of the Deep South—trashy enough to love a bologna sandwich, but stuck-up enough to correct a UPS driver’s grammar. She considers herself an outsider passing as an insider—a murmuring pigeon lady masquerading as a country club mom. This unique perspective, she thinks, makes Mary Ryan a worthy conversation partner and interviewer. Then again, she has been known to indulge in delusions of grandeur.Superfreak is all about the joy of uninhibited performance. A tribute to the Rick James song “Superfreak” and the 2007 film Little Miss Sunshine (Mary Ryan’s favorite), the podcast’s title owns the label of ‘outsider.’ Mary Ryan—who wears many different hats as wife, mom, writer, and comedian—aims to explore the unique challenge of balancing family, work, and the pursuit of impossible dreams.
