On March 3, Pastor Jim preaches on Luke 9:28-36.

The Transfiguration has always puzzled me. What exactly happened to Jesus up on that mountain? What purpose did it serve? Why did Moses and Elijah show up? The text says they chatted with Jesus about “his departure and all that he was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.” Mysterious stuff.

Peter, James, and John were half asleep yet awake enough to see his “glory, and the two men who stood with them.” Interesting.

Peter didn’t know what to say, but that never stopped him. He revealed a really goofy plan to build three structures, one for Jesus, one for Elijah, and one for Moses. While in mid-sentence a cloud overshadowed them and cut Peter off. A voice said, “This is my Son, my chosen; listen to him!”

Suddenly, Jesus was found alone with his disciples, who were awed into silence. And then Jesus led them back down the mountain. Guess what was waiting for him at the bottom?
