You say you want it. The weight, the promotion, the bigger life. And you don't do it, and it isn't because you're scared. Kapil on the three costumes resistance actually wears, a mother crying over poori, a lift full of very busy men, and a child's drawing of you with a phone in your hand, and how to tell a true feeling from the false conclusion it's been attached to.
Kapil had the résumé. The scholarship, the engineering college, the MBA, Microsoft, Cognizant, hundred million dollar deals, a thousand-person team. And underneath all of it, one question that never went quiet: am I actually playing my A game? On a twin brother at IIT, a billionaire from the same tiny street, batchmates running twenty thousand people, and the twenty years he spent asking what they had that he didn't, until one coach showed him he had been asking the wrong question the entire time.
Kapil closed a hundred million dollar deal, and the congratulations email went out with his name at the top. So he hit reply all, copied the very person who'd been working against him, and gave the credit away in front of senior leadership. On why becoming known as a giver is the single most effective way to disarm even the most political person in your organisation, and what happened the moment his rival saw the credit land where it actually belonged.
You did the work. They took the credit. Kapil on why it's almost always an insecure person protecting their own position, not a verdict on your worth, and the twin-brother-in-Boston problem, the truth is that nobody ever has the full picture of what you actually did. On having the conversation that removes someone's defences by talking about your own feeling instead of their behaviour, and why "I've noticed this makes me feel insecure" beats every accusation you were about to make.
Kapil moved into a new business unit at Cognizant and was warned on day one, watch out for V, he plays favourites, he'll leave you with nothing. Instead of treating V as the enemy, Kapil got curious about what he actually wanted. On why almost everyone at work is chasing connection and belonging as much as money, why asking someone for help often makes them your ally, not your rival, and how V went from warning to relationship.
Sidelined. Passed over. Watched someone less capable get the growth you earned. Kapil opens his corporate politics series with the question that resolves ninety percent of it before you do anything else. You play favourites too, you just call it something else when it goes your way. On the difference between real toxicity, which he never excuses, and the ordinary human wiring you've been reading as a conspiracy against you.
Every human being is a battleground for exactly two forces. Deep desire, the pull toward the bigger life you can already picture. And resistance to change, the grip that keeps you exactly where you are. Kapil on why resistance fights dirty and usually wins, the five years of his life it quietly took, why you can never kill it, and how to stop handing it the wheel.
Sixteen thousand hours of coaching, more than a thousand professionals, and two corporate decades of his own, including being passed over twice. Kapil has seen every way a promotion gets lost, and made half the mistakes himself. Here are the ten that cost people years, from treating it as one conversation to accepting praise as payment, and the one question to ask yourself at the end.
