In this episode of Will Bangura’s Dog Training Today, dog behaviorist Will Bangura explains how to help leash-reactive dogs become calmer, safer, and more manageable on walks using positive reinforcement and force-free behavior modification.
Leash reactivity is one of the most common and stressful behavior problems pet parents face. Dogs may bark, lunge, growl, stare, pull, whine, or explode when they see other dogs, people, bicycles, vehicles, or unfamiliar triggers. While leash reactivity can look like aggression, many reactive dogs are responding from fear, anxiety, frustration, stress, or previous negative experiences.
Topics covered include:
• What leash reactivity is
• How leash reactivity differs from aggression
• Why fear, anxiety, frustration, and stress often drive reactive behavior
• How leash tension and handler stress can affect the dog
• Why punishment-based methods can make leash reactivity worse
• How to identify triggers and threshold distance
• Why working below threshold is essential
• How to condition a reward marker
• Why timing matters during reactive dog training
• How counterconditioning changes emotional responses
• How desensitization helps dogs gradually tolerate triggers
• How focus exercises can support calmer walks
• Why progress requires patience, consistency, and management
Will also explains why the goal is not simply to stop barking or lunging. The goal is to help the dog feel safer, think more clearly, recover faster, and learn that triggers on walks do not have to predict danger or frustration.
