Season 2 Episode 3
The ever-expanding acronym, LGBTTQQIAAP, is reflective of the myriad of identities that are present in the queer community. This openness to providing a space for all types of individuals to feel safe has proved to be of solace to present and future people desperately seeking to attach a name to their feelings.
However, more recently, cases have spontaneously ignited across the globe with mentions of "transage" and "transabled" identities being present amongst small minorities of people including a 52-year-old man acting on his desire to be a 6-year-old girl and more over, the viral Dr. Phil guest who intentionally poured drain cleaner on her eyes to become blind.
These uncommon occurrences have received as much support as they have criticism, and have even been met with attempts from people within the queer community to quickly embrace and adopt these new identities. Should these identities be accepted? Are they legitimate?
On this week’s episode of Talking Taboo, Paul Schulz, Meredith Sloan and Tej Joshi define transgenderism, and differentiate it from these two novel identities that have been referred as being similar forms of “trans-lifestyles” with the help of Anthony Sis, the Assistant Director of the LQBGTQ+ center at the University of Miami as well as Dr. Brenna Munro, a current professor of Women and Gender Studies.
This episode aired in the Fall of 2017.
