Trapped at 920 Feet: Intense Tower Rescue

Listen Later

On February 28th in north Gregg County, Texas, two occupants became trapped nearly 920 feet in the air after their hot air balloon struck a 1,100-foot communications tower.

What followed was a highly technical high-angle rescue led by the Longview Fire Department and assisting agencies. Crews began climbing the tower around 8:50 a.m. and made patient contact approximately an hour later. Fourteen firefighters operated on the tower, building rope systems, stabilizing the basket, and conducting a staged descent nearly 1,000 feet above the ground.

This video breaks down how the rescue was executed — from stabilization and wind considerations to multi-stage lowering operations and patient transfer. At this height, there are no shortcuts. Only preparation, discipline, and a crew willing to climb when everyone else is looking up.

Outstanding work by everyone involved.
