Publisher's Summary:
New York Times best-selling author Jane Feather returns to the Regency with a passionate tale that sweeps the listener from the dangerous streets of Paris to the glittering ballrooms of London.
Lady Hero Fanshawe has chafed at society's dictates since the death of her fiancé taught her that joy can be fleeting. When her brother disappears in Paris at the height of the Terror, she has no hesitation in disguising herself as a boy and risking her life to find him - or in joining forces with a chance-met ally, the enigmatic William Ducasse, viscount St. Aubrey. And she has no regrets in indulging in a passionate affair with the dangerously handsome stranger in the shadow of the guillotine....
Half French, half English, William is committed to his shadow life, flirting with death to rescue imperiled aristocrats. Marriage is an indulgence he cannot afford. Once Hero returns to London, he refuses to risk her good name by continuing their liaison. But he has reckoned without the determined Hero's disregard for propriety...or the dictates of his own heart.

I love books by Jane Feather and I think I have read almost all of them. This one unfortunately is too much like some of her others for me. If you are new to Feather's book though, you may enjoy this one. Her historical detail is always topnotch. But if you have read earlier books you will probably find the characters to be very similar to previous ones--the beautiful reckless woman who dives headlong into things and the to-die-for hero who comes to her rescue.
Better before
This story started out very well. The author knows the atmosphere of the18th century and has written an amount of excellent and exiting books that takes place in that time. I particularly liked her "V" stories even if they are somewhat cruel. In this book I didn't come to like the heroine though, and the hero's emotional turnabout came to late for me, it seemed forced by the looming end of the story.
Loved it
I've been reading too many recency romances that are filled with nothing but scandal and angst for the lovers. This story that starts in the French revolution and returns to England is fast paced , well written and has some sizzle as well as likeable main characters. Other reviewers have given plenty of information about the plot.. I have always been a fan of Jane Feather but not so much of late. This book is more like the Jane of old. One star lost for a rather simplified plot at the end.

The hero left the heroine in the dark so she messes things up because she would rather have it her way than ask a question. The final scene with the villain was so lame that 2 days later I forgot that I had finished reading the book. Love my oldie Jane Feather books and enjoy rereading more than any new stuff of hers.
Good Read
I like this book as well as all of her other books. All are historical romances and live up to the hype. This brings the horror of the guillotine and France's terror to light. But as all of her books, this one has a happy ending.
