The Frontier Beyond Fear

Travesty on Death Row: Letters of Conscience & Compassion

Listen Later

Playwright and performer Swithin Fry shares the poignant story of his penpal correspondence with Tim, a convict on Ohio's Death Row.  From his vantage point in the United Kingdom, Swithin became aware of the difficulties Tim has faced seeking a retrial, leading to Swithin visiting Tim in prison and launching "Tim's Hope Campaign".

In Swithin's words..."I'm not saying they are all innocent; I'm not saying that Tim is innocent - though I believe he is.  I'm saying the death penalty is wrong, morally wrong, the same way that killing is wrong, morally wrong.  Tim is seeking a retrial.  Nothing more, nothing less."

On March 1, Swithin debuted a monologue he wrote about his experience visiting Tim, performed at a major regional theater in England.  Swithin hopes to take this on tour in America. Swithin and host Susan Larison Danz discuss how as a civilized, enlightened society, we must humanize our understanding of "justice" in consideration of the accused, the convicted and the victims.  Compassion,  conscience and truth can set our society free.
