While teens under 18 are not yet legal adults, they have very different needs than younger children who are served by Pediatrics. MIT students are considered adults, even if they are younger than 18. Legally, they are on their own when it comes to making medical decisions and navigating the health care system. But at what age does a teen’s medical record become private from his/her parents? Can they consult privately with caregivers about medical issues (e.g. birth control, sexuality) before this time? Patrick Egan, MD is here to discuss these issues and talk about what accommodations are available for treating “near-adults” in a pediatrics setting?
