The episode begins with Commander Michael Burnham and the crew of the USS Shenzhou investigating a mysterious object in space. When they discover it is a Klingon vessel, tensions rise as the Klingons reveal they are there to protect their territory from the Federation. This leads to a deadly confrontation that sets the tone for the rest of the season.
