Inventive Problem Solving: TRIZ Talks

TRIZ: The Inventive Problem Solving System

Listen Later

TRIZ (pronounced “trees”) is a powerful, systematic methodology for inventive problem solving. The name comes from the Russian Teoriya Resheniya Izobretatelskikh Zadatch, which translates to Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. Developed in 1946 by Soviet engineer and inventor Genrich Altshuller, TRIZ is the result of a groundbreaking study of hundreds of thousands of patents. Altshuller discovered that inventive solutions follow repeatable patterns and that technological systems evolve according to predictable laws. Instead of relying on random creativity or trial-and-error, TRIZ provides a structured framework that allows anyone to generate innovative solutions by using the collective knowledge of the world’s best inventors. Core Idea of TRIZ The central challenge in problem solving is overcoming contradictions — situations where improving one aspect of a system makes another aspect worse (e.g., making something stronger makes it heavier). TRIZ offers practical tools and principles to resolve these contradictions creatively, often leading to elegant solutions that eliminate the trade-off entirely. Key Concepts and Tools
  • Ideal Final Result (IFR): Envisioning the perfect solution where the desired function is achieved with minimal resources, cost, or harm.
  • 40 Inventive Principles: A set of proven solution patterns derived from global patents.
  • Contradiction Matrix: A tool that maps conflicting parameters to the most relevant inventive principles.
  • Substance-Field Analysis (Su-Field): A modeling technique for analyzing and improving technical systems.
  • Trends of Technical Evolution: Patterns that predict how systems naturally develop over time.
TRIZ removes psychological inertia — the tendency to think within familiar limits — and guides users toward breakthrough ideas that are both innovative and practical. Today, TRIZ is widely applied in engineering, product development, manufacturing, business strategy, and many other fields. It is used by leading companies worldwide to accelerate innovation, reduce development time, and solve complex problems more effectively. In short, TRIZ transforms innovation from an unpredictable act of genius into a repeatable, learnable, and highly effective process.
