In this episode of Ohazassu, I share a story from my early days in Japan that still makes me laugh.
What should have been a simple driverâs license conversion from Australia turned into a confusing experience at the testing center. The eye test was completely different from what I was used to, and without realizing it, I answered in a way that made things awkward fast. That led to a long and slightly tense exchange with an officer who thought I didnât understand Japanese, when really I just didnât understand the test. Looking back, itâs one of those moments that reminds me how small cultural differences can trip you up, and how easy it is to misread a situation when youâre somewhere new. I also share a useful Japanese phrase at the end: shiryoku kensa (èŠćæ€æ»), which means âeye test.â
