The King's Hand in History

True Religion vs. Rationalism in the Roaring 1920s (Ep. 30)

Listen Later

We live in an increasingly hedonistic, humanistic, and

hyper-stimulated modern culture. These three traits were some of the most prevalent during the decade known as “the roaring 20s,” or “the jazz age”. The 20s should be distinguished as the period that popularized skepticism, scientism, and materialism, and previewed the obsession with sports, sex, entertainment, and music that are such common features of the western world. There were also huge technological leaps for everyday people then, as cars, radio’s, movie-viewing, buying stuff with credit, and easy birth control were made common. Most importantly, this was a time of earth-shaking change for Protestant and evangelical Christianity. This decade saw the heat of the fierce war between biblical fundamentalists and theological liberals, as well as the conflict between traditional, intellectual Christianity, and a popular, emotionalistic, and sensationalized charismatic Christianity that developed the long tradition of revival meetings and evangelistic crusades. By the transition into the 30s, liberalism had conquered the mainline Protestant groups, new denominations and schools were founded, and western popular culture was mostly dominated by a skeptical, scientist, and materialistic worldview that opposed biblical Christianity through education, entertainment, and social norms.

In this episode, you’ll the basics of the circumstances,

conflicts, characters, and outcomes of the 1920s. Also, I’ll explain the major lessons that Bible-believing Christians should learn from the failures of our forefathers during that time. We’ll discuss how many compromised with fake Christians, many held on to traditional identities and titles that had no value, and how many Protestant believers failed to zealously and industriously reach the lost and perishing youth of their generation.
