It’s late in the evening;
my wife’s gone off to bed
my guitar’s off its stand,
I got a song in my head
I often wonder where all
of my tunes are sent from
Is it God or the devil or
just my muse who has come
to grant me his blessing
that helps me to cope
after long weary days
at the end of my rope
locked in my soundproof studio
so I’m not being rude you know
as I chase one more dream
that does not come with sleep
trying to fulfill a promise
that I cannot keep
to make it in music
which is such a huge leap
and my wife knows my urge
to write songs runs so deep
but she knows that my chances
for success are quite steep
and my failures at times
tend to make my wife weep
I spend hours away
from her sweet company
on what seldom has paid
all the bills that are heaped
monthly inside our mailbox
while I polish techniques
but she knows that I love her
many songs that I write
are about all the ways
that she brings me delight
and it’s starting to look like just
one more of those nights
where my brain cells are empty
and nothing’s going write
so I guess I’ll postpone
my next chance for a Grammy
and demand that my muse for
tonight will not hand me
More time spent in useless
minutes away my from my wife
so I think I will surprise her
and kiss her goodnight
and perhaps we’ll make music
that cannot be sung
that all lovers share when
a long day is done
it beats sorting mental blocks
and it’s a whole lot more fun
And I’ll take one more shot
at tomorrow’s setting sun.
