President Donald Trump said he has learned that his administration might need to take "a little bit of a softer touch" in its immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, following the fatal shootings of U.S. citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal agents last month. Trump's comments come amid mounting backlash, including from some Republican lawmakers, over the Department of Homeland Security's response to the shootings and its broader handling of operations in Minneapolis. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, both Democrats, called the withdrawal a positive first step but urged the Trump administration to end the remaining federal presence as soon as possible. After Pretti's shooting, Trump removed Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino from overseeing the Minneapolis operation and placed Homan in charge, calling him "tough but fair" and saying he would report directly to the president.
