When was the last time you dug in your heels—even when you knew you were wrong? That moment of tension often reveals the root of every broken relationship: misunderstanding. 

This Sunday, we’re kicking off our new series Trust Issues by exploring how empathy can move us from assumption to understanding. Through the powerful story of David and Jonathan (1 Samuel 18–20) and a practical tool from Jordan Peterson, we’ll discover how asking better questions—and truly listening—can begin to restore the trust we thought was gone for good.

  1. Icebreaker – When was there a time you were absolutely convinced you were right—until you found out you weren’t?   (Keep it light or funny, if possible, to get everyone talking.) 
  2. 1 Samuel 20:1 – How does David’s question show empathy rather than accusation? What do you think it cost David emotionally to ask instead of assume? Why is it sometimes easier to assume the worst about someone than to ask for clarity? 
  3. Digging Deeper – When has someone shown you empathy that made a real difference in how you felt—or in how much you trusted them?  Why do you think empathy is such a powerful first step in rebuilding trust? 
  4. Personal Reflection: Is there someone in your life right now that you’ve assumed something about—but haven’t asked?
