Trust is extremely important in relationships, whether it be our relationship with friends and family, or our relationship with an employer or the government. People are so divided on everything from climate change to race relations, that trust is at an all time low. Dr. Darryl Stickel has spent the last 20 years building trust in the most hostile of environments.
At the age of 17, Dr. Stickel was nearly beaten to death. That event should have led to trust issues, but instead it helped him to develop a deeper sense of empathy. Knowing what it was like to be in pain or to struggle, Dr. Stickel thought he wanted to pursue a career in clinical psychology. Instead he discovered a great lack of trust in the world which hindered his ability to help people. Returning to school to pursue public administration, Dr. Stickel decided to write his thesis on building trust in hostile environments. Everyone thought it was an issue he wouldn’t be able to solve, but he shocked everyone.
Dr. Stickel discovered a framework for not only being able to trust but for being trustworthy as well. The four pillars of trust that he teaches are benevolence, integrity, ability, and context. When we understand what success looks like for someone else and are able to help them achieve it, their perception of risk goes down and their ability to be vulnerable increases. Having seen profound success, Dr. Stickel has literally written the book on trust. Check out, Building Trust: Exceptional Leadership in an Uncertain World, to improve your trust score.
