The UK saw wind energy curtailment payments of £1.3 million on a single day last week. Wind energy gets blamed for these payments despite the fact that wind energy is operating efficiently and the real problem is lack of adequate grid capacity as well as limited options for energy storage.

According to our own analysis, UK ratepayers would be spending almost four times that amount to leave old coal plants online, amounting to £3.8 billion in coal operating costs instead of £1 billion in wind energy constraint payments.

Average energy storage costs in the UK are £580,000 per MW in CapEx and operational costs are ~ £2.50 / MWhr. 6000 MWhr of storage would have facilitated the offtake of almost 100% of the #windpower.
