Armaan Gupta (aka Kahani Music) is a musical artist, DJ, producer, creative director and the founder and owner of the South Asian Diaspora collective and record label NONRESIDENT. He has helped launch the careers of a number of rising artists in both the east and the west, and has recently shifted to focusing on his own artist project - Kahani - and his upcoming Indo Warehouse party series.
I'm a little biased because Armaan is one of my best friends, but I can genuinely say he is one of the most inspiring people I know, and I continue to learn and grow immensely by being around him. He is a rare breed of business savvy and creative talent - an artist at heart with immaculate taste, with an ability to think through and present his creations in a way that can thrive and scale financially. Throughout the course of our friendship thus far, Armaan has been my manager, we have created party residencies in Tulum and New York, we have collaborated on numerous audio and visual projects, and have grown closer throughout it all.
What I admire most about Armaan is (1) his curiosity to take initiative, dive in and learn new skills (he has been described as a Swiss Army knife) and (2) the strong emphasis he places on fostering community and building up those around him. His approach to growing his career and the careers of his peers is refreshingly collaborative in an industry where many are misguided to believe that the only way to win is to be cutthroat and competitive. In this chat, we dive into why he is so bullish on collaboration and thinking bigger than himself, the importance of knowing your purpose as an artist, balancing your work with relationships, finding a sense of identity and belonging as a first generation immigrant kid in the west, and much more.
