The posse causing is a United States federal law prohibiting using federal troops to enforce state laws. The act was passed in 1878 in response to the Federal government’s use of troops to enforce Reconstruction-era laws in the Southern states. 

While most believe the posse comitatus act generally prevents the use of federal troops for law enforcement purposes, several exceptions allow the government to do an end-around on everyone’s right to privacy and freedom. 

In recent years, the posse comitatus act has come under increased scrutiny, as some believe it hinders the Federal government’s ability to respond to emergencies.
