 Alice was dependent on the patronage of the Hobey household. She was being educated alongside their children so that, as Lady Hobey had told me, she might “better herself”. Alice didn’t have much time for playing with cats. In return for her education, she worked as Lucy’s servitor. This morning, she had been switching off between translating Herodotus from Greek into Latin and darning a hole in a long, striped stocking.
