Listen Later

Today, we continue in our theme of Immanuel—God with us in hope.

Hope is a fascinating concept because we can use the word as a feeling or a sense that we have for someone or something else, but then also something we long to have for ourselves. When we say that we are hope-less, we mean that we are on the verge of giving up and see no reason to go on. Yet even when we confess hopelessness, what we really mean is that we are desperate for hope.

King David spoke of hope often. Listen to some of his songs, his psalms now. Why don’t you close your eyes? Breathe deep. Tune in. Listen to God’s Word.

Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you. (Psalm 25:4-5 NLT)

A little farther into the chapter he says …

Protect me! Rescue my life from them! Do not let me be disgraced, for in you I take refuge. May integrity and honesty protect me, for I put my hope in you. (Psalm 25:20-22 NLT)

In Psalm 42 and 43, he repeats a callback question and answer: Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and my God!

And lastly, listen to the declaration in Psalm 62:5-6:

Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken.

When we place our hope in Christ, we cannot ever claim our world will not be rocked, that our foundation will not be shaken, but what we can proclaim, just like David, is because God is our rock and salvation and fortress, we will not be shaken when the world around us shakes.

What is shaking around you right now? What threats are coming at your life? What if you kept Psalm 62:5-6 handy and ready to read or recite? What if you declared that in Christ, and because of Christ, you will not be shaken? You can claim that truth because He is Immanuel—God with you … in hope.

Let’s pray: “Lord, thank You that regardless of the threats that come at me, You are the fortress, You are the Rock that no one can overpower or break. Help me to hide in You, inside Your hope. This Christmas, may I experience hope and share hope. As above, so below.”
