MLB – Carter Hawkins joins Chicago Cubs as new general manager
Carter Hawkins has been formally introduced as the Cubs’ new general manager, stepping into a position that had been open since Jed Hoyer was promoted to president of baseball operations almost a year ago. Hawkins comes to Chicago after 14 seasons with Cleveland, including the last five as an assistant general manager. He also supervised the team’s player development department. Hawkins says he is looking forward to helping the Cubs return to the playoffs.

Red Sox 12, Astros 3 – Schwarber, Red Sox slam Astros 12-3, lead ALCS 2-1
Kyle Schwarber's grand slam helped the Red Sox rout the Houston Astros 12-3 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven AL Championship Series. One game after J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers each hit a grand slam in Houston, Schwarber hit a second-inning 3-0 pitch out. Christian Arroyo homered in the third to give the wild-card Red Sox a 9-0 lead for the second game in a row. Martinez and Devers each homered again, and Kiké Hernández had two more hits for Boston. The Red Sox could advance to the World Series with win at Fenway Park in Games 4 and 5 on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Titans 34, Bills 31 – Titans stop Allen on 4th down, hang on to beat Bills 34-31
Derrick Henry scored his third touchdown with 3:05 left, and the Tennessee Titans stopped Josh Allen on a fourth-down quarterback sneak in the final seconds to beat Buffalo 34-31. The Bills' four-game winning streak was snapped. The AFC East leaders drove to the Titans 3 on their final possession and could have sent the game to overtime with a field goal, but instead went for the win, and didn’t execute. On fourth down, the rugged quarterback moved from the shotgun to take the snap from under center. Tennessee’s defensive line surged forward to meet Allen, whose legs went out from under him.

NBA – NBA preview: Silver says he hopes Irving gets vaccinated
Adam Silver, the basketball fan, would prefer to see Kyrie Irving on the court again with the Brooklyn Nets as soon as possible. Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, would prefer to see Irving vaccinated. On the eve of the league’s 75th anniversary season, the third to be impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, Silver said Monday that he hopes Irving — one of the few players in the league who has not yet chosen to be vaccinated — changes his mind before long and clears a path to get back on the floor with the Nets.
NBA – NBA hires Danielle Scott, league's 6th female full-time ref
Danielle Scott has become the sixth NBA female referee. The daughter of college basketball officials was promoted Monday to the full-time NBA staff referee roster. She joins Lauren Holtkamp-Sterling, Ashley Moyer-Gleich, Simone Jelks, Natalie Sago and Jenna Schroeder. That’s the most female refs the NBA has ever had on staff at one time. Scott says she hopes the notion of female referees in the league no longer seems unusual.
