Didn’t automatically make them saved, and they’re only “God’s people” in the name instead of action. He compares it to Christianity in America today. How being born American, and saying the Pledge doesn’t make you Christian, but instead; it’s the relationship you build with Christ! It is only ever your faith that brings you to Salvation with God. Not work, and especially not empty titles.
