Mzwakhe Mbuli, the “People’s Poet,” was born in Sophiatown in August 1959. In 1966, the town was bulldozed and Mbuli’s family, which included seven brothers and sisters, was forcibly removed to Soweto. He’s a former Deacon at the Apostolic Faith Mission Church in Naledi, Soweto [ohh wow! Ka nnete?]
The Soweto Uprising occurred in 1976 and this served a very formative experience for him; after experiencing the death of his fellow students, his school went on strike and he was encouraged to write poetry during this time.
