Have you ever noticed that most people don’t like the quiet? If you go to a dinner party and it’s quiet for more than a few seconds, someone will probably chime in with a corny joke or a comment on the weather. It’s human nature to want to connect with other people, so we tend to fill up our lives by talking to each other. And even if we’re alone in our house, it’s likely that the television is on or music is playing – even if just for background noise. Now, none of this is bad in moderation. It’s good to have relationships, and it’s just fine to have music on in the background. But the constant noise and action can negatively affect our spiritual lives, if we aren’t careful.
The Bible says in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness.” But hearing God speak to us through scripture requires making time to read Scripture, or to listen to the Bible read on your smart phone. This means a 30-second devotional – while good – might not help us get deeper with God. This week, I encourage you to spend more time in Scripture. Listen to what God is trying to tell you by the Holy Spirit through Holy Scripture. This is Luis Palau.
