Mel’s Mindful Moments Season 1 - Episode 127

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment without judgement. It is a technique that can be learned and, when practiced on a regular basis, can help reduce stress, anxiety and depression, it can improve your attention span, increase energy levels, improve physical health, and improve your overall well-being.

Mindfulness can be practiced with everything you do during the course of your day. It is not something that is confined to just meditative practices. You can take mindful walks, mindful eating, mindful bathing, you can even be mindful while drinking your morning or afternoon tea.

Here are some common mindful techniques that you can incorporate into your daily activities.

1. Before you begin, take a few deep breaths to relax you mind and body. Inhale deeply through your nose and exhale slowly through your mouth. This will help set the foundation for your mindful activity.

2. As you begin the activity, be aware of your senses. Allow yourself to experience fully what is happening. Never rush this process, just allow yourself to experience the moment and the sensations it brings.

3. Try as much as you can to remain focused on the present moment. Be aware of any thoughts or distractions that arise. Dismiss them and gently bring your attention back to what you are experiencing in the present moment.

4. Take your time to observe the every detail. Start with the smallest things around you. Notice colors, shapes and textures of what you are currently experiencing. Pay attention to the shadows and light of the things around you.

5. Stay relaxed during the activity. Don’t rush the process, keep in the moment allowing the mind and the body to be aware of the whole experience.

6. Cultivate a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to be in the present moment to experience the beauty of it. Express your appreciation for the small things you may otherwise overlook.

7. As you finish the activity, take a few moments to reflect on your experience. Notice things like changes in your mood, energy or overall well-being. Then carry this sense of mindfulness with you as you transition back into your normal daily activities.

I hope you can incorporate this simple but effect technique into your daily lives and begin to live out more and more mindful moments throughout your week.

Have a great and mindful day!
