The central government had announced the merger of Lok Sabha Tv and Rajya Sabha TV in March 2021. The new channel Sansad TV was officially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the presence of Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla yesterday.
This new channel is expected to have programming in both English and Hindi on the functioning of Parliament and democratic institutions, governance and implementation of schemes/policies, history and culture of India and issues/interests/concerns of contemporary nature. Parliamentary sessions will also be telecast live from both houses.
Veteran IAS Officer Ravi Capoor was appointed the CEO of Sansad TV in February along with IRS Officer Manoj K Arora who was appointed as interim Editor in Chief. They will head a team of over 200 employees whose job will be to keep the channel and its programming up to standard. There is slated to be shows and programs on various topics which will be covered by a variety of anchors.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor will host interviews with personalities from all spheres of life in his show “To The Point”. Principal Advisor to the Ministry of Finance, Sanjeev Sanyal, also launched his show on economic policies called “Economic Sutra”. Apart from them, it is also said that leaders like Karan Singh (Congress), Bibek Debroy (Economist), Amitabh Kant (NITI Ayog Chairman) and Hemant Batra (Advocate) will also be hosting their own shows on the channel.
The new channel and a more professional way of working were put in place for the central government to incite interest in government functioning. There is also the objective of explaining new bills, laws and policies to the public to counter the menace of fake news and WhatsApp forwards. Our sources told us that there was also the intent to stop the manipulation of policies by the opposition leaders as the public will now have access to experts directly.
The new channel was welcomed by people from all spheres of life until the announcement that the channel will be mainstream and will also be available on OTT was made public. This triggered a series of muted protests from the television fraternity and many actors and production houses expressed reservations on the matter.
