In January 2019, a 21-year-old woman arrived at a hospital in Slovenia with her left hand severed cleanly above the wrist.

She said it was a freak accident with a circular saw. But as investigators looked more closely at the bizarre incident, almost nothing about it seemed accidental.

In fact, it had all been part of a scheme to turn a permanent injury into an insurance payout of more than a million euros. Then detectives looked at the man beside her: her boyfriend, Sebastien Abramov. Four years earlier, his previous girlfriend, Sara Veber, had been shot dead in what had also been called... an accident.
