My old buddy from Gloucester, Va., Peter Teagle hooked me up with Bucky.  We sat down in Bucky's house to record this podcast.

 Bucky, an Emory and Henry College graduate, enlisted in the Army in 1965 and attended the Infantry Officer Candidate School, where he was a distinguished graduate. He was commissioned to the rank of second lieutenant in 1966. He volunteered for the Special Forces and served in the force until late 1970, by which time he had attained the rank of captain and served two combat tours in Vietnam, where he was assigned to the Special Forces’ Mobile Strike Force. During this time he was awarded the Silver Star Medal, four Bronze Star Medals, the Air Medal and three Vietnamese Crosses of Gallantry. After attending the Infantry Officers Advanced Course, Burruss served in Germany for three years, commanding airborne and mechanized infantry companies. He then returned to the Special Forces at Fort Bragg, N.C., as an instructor and faculty adviser in the Special Forces School, teaching in the Special Forces Officers Course, the Operations & Intelligence Course and the Military Freefall Course. In 1977, he completed the rigorous British Special Air Service Selection Course and was selected by the late Colonel Charlie A. Beckwith to help form and train the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment - Delta, where he served his remaining time in the Army. He commanded the unit’s first operational element and later served as the commander of Delta’s Selection and Training Detachment, as the operations officer and as the deputy commanding officer. During this time, he participated in the ill-fated Iran raid, the invasion of Grenada and a number of classified operations in the Middle East, South and Central America and elsewhere. He was commended by the British armed forces for his assistance to the Special Air Service in the Falkland Islands campaign. Burruss retired from the Army on Jan. 1, 1987 to pursue a career in writing. His published works include Mike Force, a personal account of his 22 months in Vietnam, four novels, and has written numerous pieces for the Philadelphia Inquirer 

I am joined on this podcast with an old friend, Eddie Jackson, during our sit down with our high school football coach, Turnley Todd.  Coach Todd grew up in Orange County, Va.  His college football was played at The University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He was drafted into the National Football League by the Green Bay Packers in the era of Paul Horning and Bart Starr and played under Coach Vince Lombardi.  A knee injury and subsequent surgery sidelined him for a bit until the Philadelphia Eagles called.  However, he could not honor his contract with the Eagles because he was already a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army through UVA's ROTC program.  The 1st Infantry Division of the U.S. Army needed him to serve as a lieutenant leading a platoon in Viet Nam...and the rest is history.  As a student and player of his and friend of his son's,  I was fortunate to be exposed to a tough, but fair, leadership style that helped hundreds of boys that played for him grow into young men.

This is a solo episode.  My ravings will address some thoughts on the relaxing of the constraints on our daily lives and possibly a country that we can analyze to predict what will happen as result: Sweden.  I am optimistic.

COVID-19 statistics and connections between virus risk and gender, race, age and co-morbidities.  Also, the darker your skin, the higher the risk of COVID-19 death.  The statistics thus far are frightening.  Many light skinned people have co-morbidities like our darker brethren; but we have less melanin thus absorb more UV B light.  Could this be at least one part of the increased virus risk:  Low Vitamin D levels.

From New York to L.A. to Manteo, Carl has made a career out of creating beauty and style for the stage and screen.  He was a 2004 Emmy nominated costume designer for the film "Iron Jawed Angels".  He was the executive director of the Lost Colony outdoor theater production when a fire ravaged over 90% of the costume department.  Hear about his career and how he and many dedicated folks literally resurrected the Lost Colony wardrobe from the ashes.
