Two Puck Drop

Before there was the PWHL, there were its predecessors. Among these was the CWHL, or the Canadian Women’s Hockey League. Join us as we dig into the history of the CWHL from the early days of the league being established to the emergence of its competitors, boardroom changes, and its eventual dramatic collapse.

Who was the very first mascot in the NHL? What are the backstories of some of our favourite anthropormorphic guys?

Join TPD as we run through the emergence of mascots in the NHL and dive into some of the lore of our faves - believe it or not, the notes ran longer, we had to cut for time.

Join TPD for our first reaction episode as we look into the new uniforms, team colours and meanings of our four new PWHL expansion teams: PWHL Detroit, PWHL Hamilton, PWHL Las Vegas and PWHL San Jose!

Where did the colour inspo come from?  What team names are definitely out? How come there’s so much orange?

Ready to drop gloves?

To date, the NHL is the only major sports league of the Big Four in North America to allow fighting. To find out why, TPD explores the history of fighting in hockey all the way from Canada in the 1890s through to the 2026 Olympics.

What exactly does the rulebook say? What about the PWHL and major tournaments? Where did the enforcers come from, and where did they go? And how come it comes back to money again?

This week is something a little different as TPD looks forward to the start of the NHL season (ICYMI - the PWHL season doesn't start until DECEMBER.)

Join us for Habs chat (yes, again), Leafs thoughts, Rookie/Prospect Watch, a general season pregame, plus side quests like the geopolitics of Kinder Eggs.

P.S. Things might have shifted between recording this and putting it out. Bear with us!

Before she became the GM for PWHL Detroit, Manon Rhéaume was making history in the '90s as the first woman to ever play in the NHL. Part of a collection of episodes we're doing on trailblazers in hockey, join us as we dive into Manon Rhéaume's story as The First Woman of Hockey™.

The offseason has been really getting to us...

To celebrate the return of the NHL this month (and the PWHL schedule being published soon…right?!), TPD dives into hockey lore and traditions including playoff projectiles, teams’ rallying cries, and the best thing to ever come out of the Canadian mint.

Over the past few months we've seen plenty of Americans from star goalies to team captains request to trade away from their Canadian NHL teams. But it doesn't stop there - Canadians have moved to teams south of the border after years in Canada's hockey pressure cooker.

So this week we're asking:
What's contributing to the NHL player exodus from Canada?
What unique circumstances do Canadian teams and their players face?
And of course, what are the financial undercurrents of it all?

In Spring 2026, we learned the exciting news that the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) would be gaining 4 new teams for the upcoming 2026-27 season. We look back on the PWHL Takeover Tour, the 2026 expansion process, and wonder if any expansion process is ever smooth sailing.

Oh, and Mathy is ready to commit to flying the flag for 1/3 of the whole league. Seriously.

P.S. Walter’s status correct at time of recording - she has, thankfully, since surfaced. Whether or not she has tan lines is unconfirmed.
