Welcome to today's podcast episode, Jo and Paula wanted to look at how strong women can also be hugely vulnerable, and at times feel powerless.
Just because someone appears strong in adversity, doesn't mean they won't find certain situations difficult. For some they become someone else and struggle to find their voice. They don't speak up and end up compromising themselves, this can go on for many years. Today Paula and Jo are joined by Dylis.
Dylis is a successful business woman, having held senior positions in Barclays and running her own business for the past 20 years as an International Sales and Marketing leader, coach and speaker.
She achieved this success despite her difficult childhood; living for many years with a father that drank too much, followed by a very very difficult first marriage. She indeed had many challenges to deal with.
Dylis took on the role of an adult at a very early age and this role carried on into her adult life, having had to deal with physical and mental abuse. She used her work, her children and her positive Mindset to cope and become the woman she is today.
Let's find out how Dylis's responsibilities led her to become a strong woman, yet at times vulnerable, dealing with similar difficulties faced by her own mother.

June 14, 2020 021 - Impact on the mental health of children of alcoholics
In episode 21 Jo and Paula are chatting to Suzannah Butcher about the impact of living with a parents drinking on your mental health.
For many people living with a parent that struggles with drink isn't specific to their childhood, but runs well into their adult life. Often those impacted don't make the connection between their child experience and their adult challenges and strengths.
This is one of the topics Jo is particularly interested in, there isn't a lot of evidence out there about this, although there are known characteristics of adult children of alcoholics.
Suzannah is the adult child of an alcoholic. The impact of growing up with parental alcoholism had a profound effect on Suzannah’s mental health and she has struggled with complex PTSD and anxiety for most of her life. Suzannah now works as an EFT tapping practitioner and a mental health advocate, supporting and improving the mental health of others.

Welcome to episode 20 of the Two Roads Travelled podcast, the topic of discussion today is the different perceptions and experiences held by siblings in the same family. When there is a parent that drinks too much, why is it that the siblings all see the situation different, and find different coping strategies?
Paula and Jo will be chatting to Nicole, she shares her story about living with her father who drank heavily.
Nicole is originally from Western Australia, she has two brothers who she grew up with, and 4 other step/half siblings all of which are younger than her. She grew up with a violent alcoholic father, which Paula and Jo also experienced. Nicole's mother left her father three times, finally making the break when Nicole was only 6 years old. She now lives in London and has done for the past 19 years with her husband, she also writes for a living.
So with all the various experience between Nicole, Paula and Jo as daughters of alcoholics, this conversation will be interesting to find out how differently they all perceived their childhood

In episode 18 Jo and Paula are chatting to Natasha Chant about mental health and alcohol misuse, including dual diagnosis.
Natasha's a registered mental health nurse. She's worked in inpatient and community settings and currently works in a mental health drop in centre in Dorset. It's an out of hours' self-referral centre for anyone to access support for their own mental health or carers to access support for themselves.
I have the privilege of working alongside peer specialists who offer their lived experience alongside clinical expertise to offer visitors space to focus on their strengths and consider how they can move forward safely to access other services. I'm passionate about providing a service for everyone in a self-defined crisis, this derives from my own personal experience of growing up living with adults with mental illness and wanting to empower others to feel they have some control over how they can move forward from their crisis.
With Natasha's experience of mental health and alcohol misuse, she's the perfect person to interview about dual diagnosis and how alcohol misuse and mental health are so intrinsically linked.

April 12, 2020 017 - Human Story Theatre on Alcohol Misuse
In this episode Jo and Paula are chatting to Amy and Gaye, they set up a company called Human Story Theatre, bringing real life issues to the stage.
They met over twelve years ago while on a medical role-play job, in Oxford. Together, and separately, they work as role-players and facilitators in teaching communication skills to medical students, qualified nurses, doctors and midwives.
Alcohol misuse is one of those topics, Jo has had the pleasure of being on the Q & A panel for their play Dry. The play demonstrates the relationships two parents have with alcohol, shifting from social drinking to dependence, all the while affecting their daughter Chloe. The play hits the spot in terms of portraying what it's really like, the impact and offering hope of recovery.

Paul Silva is an addiction recovery and life transition coach. He works with professionals to either cut down or cut out their alcohol consumption, helping his clients reevaluate their relationship with alcohol and co-create action plans to help them stay on course so that they can live a life free of anxiety and worry surrounding drinking. He also works with those in early recovery to help them uplevel their sobriety and they transition into a new way of living. Paul has transitioned himself, having gotten sober in 2011 and moved into a new career after 25 years of both drinking and being a chef. Today he offers one-on-one private coaching, with group coaching and courses to come as well. He is an author, podcaster, and writer and lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with his wife, Hina Khan, two boys and an old and clingy dachshund, Bean. Paula and Jo will be chatting to Ryan about resilience in children, covering topics of internal and external resilience. Discussing the interventions and preventions that can be put in place as well as the 7 C's of resilience.
Ryan works in the field of alcohol and drugs, supporting young people, young adults and families to make and sustain positive changes for themselves, their families and their community. Ryan believes it's important to contribute to what he feels is one of society’s most damaging problems, the effects of trauma and how that it needn’t negatively play out within adolescence and adult lives.
In the beginning of Paula's recovery, Ryan played a key part of her journey which in turn has given her the determination to change her life around and the drive to reach out and help others do the same. He has his own personal experiences to draw from which drive his passion to help and change the future lives of our young adults today. Helping them to feel comfortable, safe and free to express themselves without judgement.
