Ellen McGarrahan was raised in New York City and earned an undergraduate degree in History from Yale. She then spent the next decade working as a staff writer and an investigative reporter for several newspapers, including The Village Voice, Miami Herald and SF Weekly. In 1996, Ms. McGarrahan left the fourth estate and found her true calling as a private investigator. She cut her investigative teeth working for a well-known private investigator in San Francisco.
In February 2021, Random House published Ms. McGarrahan’s first book. Two Truths and a Lie: A Murder, a Private Investigator, and Her Search for Justice, begins with the botched execution of Jesse Tafero. Her book has received exceptional reviews from Kirkus, National Public Radio, CrimeReads, The Washington Post, Publishers Weekly, and The New York Times.
