Today Genie and Celina talk about their experiences with social distancing and quarantine. Genie lives in Austria, while Celina lives in California, so the way they experienced the onset and current aftermath of the Covid-19 or Coronavirus pandemic has been extremely different yet eerily similar.
Genie can't remember exactly when she first found out about Covid-19. However, she learned early on that the virus was only a Coronavirus and not the Coronavirus, a predecessor to the previous SARs and MERs. Genie traveled to Thailand to visit her family and discovered upon arrival in Bangkok that the world had been completely flipped upside down. Austria was going to close their border and airports, which caused Oliver, Genie's boyfriend, to panic while abroad. In Bangkok there were many prevention methods already put into place, such as widely available hand sanitizer and requirements to wear masks. Things were much different in Austria. Stores were running out of toilet paper, hand sanitizers and masks. When they got back to Austria, they had to do an official 14-day quarantine. Genie started to learned to cope with the situation by channeling her creativity and staying in touch through digital communication.
Celina remembers finding out about the situation before CRSSD, a music festival in San Diego. After the festival occured, California began to place shelter in place orders, requiring everyone to stay at home and only leave for emergencies or necessities. Celina has been focusing on her mental and physical wellness. She finished a 30-day yoga challenge in order to train not only her body but also her mind. She found it to be calming in this tumultuous time. Celina also touches upon unemployment and dealing with having family members in the frontline. Instead of harnessing stress, she channels her energy into being active, going on runs, and creativity, practicing her DJ skills. She admits that wearing masks at first felt foreign, but realizes that these are our shields against an invisible enemy.
Genie and Celina also share resources that you can use to decompress, stay fit, and keep entertained while sheltering in place and working from home.
