UoN, CIBSE, LEIA COLLABORATE ON JOURNAL, CALL FOR PAPERS
The University of Northampton (UoN) and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Lifts Group have joined with the Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA) on Transportation Systems in Buildings, an open-access, online journal for dissemination of research and innovations in lift and escalator technology. Drawing from papers presented at the annual Symposium on Lift & Escalator Technologies, the first issue was recently released. Through October, editors will accept submissions for the next issue, expected to be published in early 2018. Information about how to submit may be found here.
UNATTENDED TODDLER GETS HAND STUCK IN ESCALATOR IN CHINA
A two-year-old boy playing unattended on an escalator in a shopping mall in Tongren, China, fell and got his hand stuck between the unit’s rolling belt and stairs on April 30, the Daily Mail reports. Security footage shows the boy falling and being dragged down the escalator with his hand trapped. A woman rushed down to hit the emergency-stop button moments later. It took firefighters approximately 15 min. to free the child, who was transported by ambulance to a hospital. His injuries are unknown.
COLOMBO HIGH-RISE PROJECT NEARS FINISH LINE
Aviation Industry Corp. of China (AVIC) and subsidiary AVIC International Hotels Lanka Ltd. expect to unveil the AVIC Astoria project in Colombo, Sri Lanka, to the public before the end of the year, the Daily Mirror reports. AVIC Astoria will consist of four 142-m-tall, 39-story buildings with more than 600 apartments. AVIC used aluminum-formwork construction technology from China to build Astoria, which is said to boast impressive sea and city views regardless of apartment location.
