This year’s biggest surprise is an unassuming game of epic proportions. Among Us, a creation of InnerSloth, is an online multiplayer game that is akin to Mafia. It was launched on June 15, 2018 but really only got traction more than a year later. It basically revolves around social deduction. Players can take on two roles which are crew members and impostors. Both roles have essential tasks in order for them to succeed in the game. Either way, both are exciting parts that definitely need some much needed strategizing.

The basic premise and story of Among Us is that crewmates need to operate the ship so they must do some tasks. However, a shape shifting alien has infiltrated their ship and is planning to wreak havoc. They aren’t predatory, but they are definitely there to destroy anyone in their path. For crewmates, they both have to complete their jobs as well as identify the impostor that is killing everyone. If crewmates are able to complete all their tasks or eliminate the impostors, then they are the winner. If the impostor can kill off crewmates to the point that the number of crewmates and impostors are equal, then they are the winners. They can also press the sabotage button and if the crewmates are not able to accomplish the sabotage task, then the impostors win.

There are a lot of reasons why Among Us is, safe to say, the biggest game of 2020. The most obvious one is because it became the content of a lot of popular streamers and basically got free exposure. Also, other than the fact that it is an insanely great and fun game, there are also some less obvious reasons and one of them is that Among Us is a cross platform game. What does this mean? Well, it means players who play in various gaming platforms will still be able to play with each other. Those who play on a computer will definitely meet people who play on their phones and vice versa. Among Us is great for those who do not have the sophisticated hardware. Also, it is a fantastic game on the go that is available on mobile devices, handheld consoles, and PC.

In September alone, Among Us had 41 million downloads. In November, the record number of players reached a staggering 500 million. This fact has cemented Among Us to be most played mobile game right now, surpassing the likes of Angry Birds and Call of Duty: Mobile. It is safe to say that Among Us’ popularity isn’t going away any time soon, and with the new airship map coming out and also the fact that Among Us has been released on Nintendo Switch, we may yet see even more players this 2021.
