Communication Is Crucial to Peace | UNBOXED on Purpose with Dr. Chinyere Emmanuel Egbe
What causes conflicts between people, communities, and nations?
In this episode of UNBOXED on Purpose, Rev. Dr. Barbara A. F. Brehon welcomes Dr. Chinyere Emmanuel Egbe, Professor of Economics and Finance at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York (CUNY).
Dr. Egbe shares powerful insights shaped by his childhood experiences in Nigeria during the years surrounding the Nigerian civil war. Those formative years sparked his lifelong interest in justice, peace, and the historical causes of human conflict.
Together we explore the powerful theme:
Communication Is Crucial to Peace.
In this conversation we discuss:
• How early experiences during war shaped Dr. Egbe’s passion for justice and peace
• Why human ambition and greed often fuel conflict
• The dangers of being confined within ethnic or ideological viewpoints
• Why reflection and thoughtful communication can help resolve conflict
• Lessons from Dr. Egbe’s book Elephants, the Grass and a Teacher
The title of his book reflects a powerful truth: when the “elephants” (powerful leaders) fight, the “grass” (ordinary people) often suffer.
Dr. Egbe encourages future generations to reflect, listen, and pursue understanding rather than allowing anger to shape how we treat others.
