Uncovering the World's Very First Football Club - Interview with Sports Historian Andy Mitchell

Listen Later

About the 'Foot-Ball Club' The very first football club in the world is often credited as being Sheffield FC, founded in 1857 but in actual fact, the world’s very first club dedicated to football, of any code, dates back to 1824, when John Hope established what he simply called ‘The Foot-Ball Club’ in a field just outside Edinburgh with no other contemporary football clubs known to have existed for at least another 20 years. John Hutchinson and Andy Mitchell have researched the definitive history of this ground breaking club, and show how it had an incredible influence on the long term development of football. Using archive material, they describe how the game was played, who the football players were and what motivated them. They have uncovered a fascinating picture of sports and society in the city of Edinburgh, the people who lived in it and their social networks.
